Hartland Brooklyn was started in the summer of 2012 by Emily Johnson. Emily grew up in a small town called Hartland located in Western New York, on her parents' dried flower farm. She moved to NYC to pursue an interest in design and fashion, where she worked at various fashion companies for about 8 years.
"While working as a designer for a fashion company in midtown manhattan, I began drawing birthday cards for co-workers, and eventually for their friends and family. After carefully planning how I could duplicate my hand drawn cards and very particular color palette, I began printing and hand painting each neon pop on the card. Each piece was a tiny labor of love. As the company grew I realized this wasn't a practical way to execute each card, so I met with a local printer and together we've been able to duplicate the bright neons."
Today, each card is offset printed in Brooklyn, New York with vegetable based inks, on the highest quality felted paper. The foil stamping is done in Midtown Manhattan. We strive to use sustainable, and recycled materials whenever possible, and always print in the USA. The envelopes are 100% post-consumer fiber paper.
In the Spring of 2015, Emily, her husband, and two cats moved 2 hours north of New York City to the Catskill Mountains into an old general store (built circa 1851). Together they opened Hartland's flagship retail space along with full espresso bar called Hartland on Hudson. For more information and directions click here.
